2015 MLB Power Rankings Week 10
MLB Power Ranks Week 10
The year of the call-up. If you are one of baseball's top prospects odds are you have been given the call to the big leagues. We have already seen the likes of Noah Syndergaard, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell. Now others like Joey Gallo, Francisco Lindor and Byron Buxton are getting their shot to make a name for themselves at an early age. As baseball fans we have all been spoiled with a fresh wave of new faces. It's simply time to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
*Note ~ As always all stats and records are through Sunday's games.
1. St. Louis Cardinals (41-21) ~ St. Louis maintains the best record in the bigs but at some point the injuries have to catch up to them. Lance Lynn joins the list of the disabled along with Matt Adams, Matt Holliday and of course Adam Wainwright. (Last Ranking 1)
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (37-26) ~ On the surface it seems the Dodgers do everything well. And for the most part they do. Except steal bases. As a team they are 14-for-30 which is the worst in all of baseball. (LR 3)
3. Kansas City Royals (34-25) ~ Yordano Ventura left his last start with a hand injury but isn't expected to miss a start. For the Royals' sake they better hope he is OK as their pitching depth, is, well, lacking. Joe Blanton is in line to start a game this week. (LR 4)
4. Pittsburgh Pirates (35-27) ~ Gerrit Cole became the first Pirates pitcher to be the first in baseball to win his 10th game since 1960. What does that mean? I'm not quite sure but I do know that Cole has established himself as a true ace. (LR 10)
5. Houston Astros (36-28) ~ Houston snapped their season-long seven-game losing streak by taking two of three from Seattle. The final score in the two wins? A combined 23-0. That'll work. (LR 2)
6. New York Yankees (34-28) ~ Alex Rodriguez became just the second player to surpass 2,000 RBI in his career. The only person with more is Hank Aaron who sits at 2,297 which may be out of reach for A-Rod. (LR 14)
7. Toronto Blue Jays (34-30) ~ This winning streak goes to 11 which ties a club record. They have scored an average of eight runs per game during the torrid stretch. (LR 20)
8. Tampa Bay Rays (35-29) ~ Chris Archer has shown he is mortal. After three straight games with at least 10 strikeouts and zero walks he was held to just five punchouts and issued a free pass. Oh well, he's still the first pitcher in the modern era to accomplish that in three straight. (LR 11)
9. Chicago Cubs (34-27) ~ The Cubs may be in third place in their division but they would lead the NL East and AL East. With the second wild card it is entirely possible for the NL Central to produce three playoff teams. (LR 8)
10. Washington Nationals (33-30) ~ Max Scherzer had himself a day. He may have nearly missed a perfect game but there's nothing wrong with a one-hit shutout with a franchise record (and career-high) 16 strikeouts. (LR 5)
11. San Francisco Giants (34-30) ~ Rookie Chris Heston couldn't tie Johnny Vandermeer by throwing a second consecutive no-hitter. Instead he gave up two earned runs on seven hits in just five innings. Maybe next time. (LR 6)
12. New York Mets (34-30) ~ Rumor has it that the Mets are sniffing around for help at the hot corner. What does that say for the health status of David Wright? (LR 12)
13. Detroit Tigers (33-30) ~ Justin Verlander made his season debut by tossing five solid innings over the weekend. That's good news. Even better news is that Victor Martinez is set to begin a rehab stint. (LR 9)
14. San Diego Padres (32-33) ~ The big news today is that San Diego fired manager Bud Black. I suppose with the offseason they had the Padres didn't expect to be under .500 after Flag Day. (LR 15)
15. Minnesota Twins (34-28) ~ Torii Hunter had a stripdown meltdown after being ejected from a game last week. Afterwards he said the umpire was out for "revenge" from previous disagreements. The veteran served his two-game suspension over the weekend and reminded us all that he is still a world class hothead. (LR 7)
16. Baltimore Orioles (31-31) ~ The O's had their six-game winning streak snapped Sunday but have climbed back to .500 on the season and sit just a mere three games out of first in the AL East. (LWR 16)
17. Texas Rangers (33-30) ~ Rookie Joey Gallo is showing off his power stroke in a big way. The rookie's four home runs have traveled an average of 440 feet each. Just goes to show that everything is bigger in Texas. (LR 18)
18. Los Angeles Angels (32-31) ~ Can anyone stop Albert Pujols? The slugging first baseman has sent ten balls over the fences in his last 16 games. That is what the Angels have been looking for since luring the first baseman away from St. Louis. (LR 13)
19. Cleveland Indians (29-33) ~ Corey Kluber just can't stop Miguel Cabrera. He can't even hope to contain him. After yet another home run over the weekend Cabrera is 20-for-35 with five long balls off the reigning Cy Young award winner. It might be time to give him the Barry Bonds treatment. (LR 21)
20. Seattle Mariners (28-35) ~ Felix Hernandez was rocked by Houston. He gave up eight runs while recording only one out in the shortest outing of his career. That did allow catcher Jesus Sucre to take the mound, however, and he tossed a scoreless inning giving up just one hit. Baseball is funny sometimes. (LR 17)
21. Atlanta Braves (30-33) ~ After being spoiled with dominant bullpens the past few years the wheels have fallen off in 2015. The Braves 4.64 bullpen ERA is the worst in all of baseball. (LR 19)
22. Arizona Diamondbacks (30-32) ~ Opening Day starter Josh Collmenter and his 5.24 ERA in 12 starts have been banished to the bullpen. (LR 25)
23. Oakland A's (26-39) ~ Ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte has landed on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder. Why doesn't he just throw from the left side? He can, but he can also feel the injury in his right shoulder when he throws from the left side. (LR 26)
24. Cincinnati Reds (28-34) ~ Scouts were in attendance for Johnny Cueto's last outing. Rumors are floating around that Aroldis Chapman could be made available. It won't be long before the Reds are sellers. (LR 22)
25. Chicago White Sox (28-33) ~ With another 12 strikeouts Sunday Chris Sale became the first pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2001 to record at least a dozen or more strikeouts in four straight starts. (LR 23)
26. Miami Marlins (27-37) ~ Giancarlo Stanton will face the Yankees for the first time in his career tonight. For some reason my mind was blown when I read that. I hope you feel the same way. (LR 28)
27. Boston Red Sox (27-37) ~ Their -60 run differential is not going to get it done. Looks like another lost year in Beantown. Though they do play my Braves starting tonight which means they will sweep. That's how it works. (LR 24)
28. Colorado Rockies (28-34) ~ Jorge De La Rosa picked up his 73rd career win with the Rockies becoming their all-time leader in that category. Just goes to show that pitching has been hard to come by in the Mile High city. (LR 27)
29. Milwaukee Brewers (24-40) ~ The Brewers may be terrible but Francisco Rodriguez is having a fantastic year. He has recorded 13 saves with a 1.13 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. He could be quite the trade chip come the deadline. (LR 30)
30. Philadelphia Phillies (22-42) ~ Speaking of trade chips the Phillies hold the biggest one in ace Cole Hamels. If and when he will be moved is in the hands of Ruben Amaro Jr. which should make all Phillies fans feel at ease. (LR 29)
