MLB Fantasy Fixer-Uppers May 26th 2015

Another week in the fantasy world is another week you should be scouring that waiver wire. Let's run down some players who can help out your squad this week and beyond.

Delino DeShields, 2B/OF, Texas Rangers (57% owned standard ESPN leagues)

You know you are getting old when you remember watching a player’s father in the big leagues. DeShields is one of a few players who makes me feel that way. Regardless of who his father is DeShields is starting to make a name for himself in Texas. The speedy infielder doesn’t offer anything in pop (his OBP is higher than his slugging) he does offer plenty in steals and runs scored. Batting in front of players such as Prince Fielder and the newly reinstated Josh Hamilton should make for a lot of run scoring opportunities and his fantastic .394 OBP means he will be on base most of the time those sluggers step to the plate. The dual eligibility is always nice and if you have a MI roster spot on your squad you might want to give DeShields a try. We all know when the weather heats up in Texas there are plenty of runs being scored and DeShields is a good bet to score a lot of them.

Yasmany Tomas, OF/3B, Arizona Diamondbacks (52% owned)

Arizona shocked the baseball world during the offseason when they signed the latest sought after talent from Cuba in Yasmany Tomas. It was widely thought that his power would translate well to the pros, however, he was seemingly without a position in the desert and started the season in Triple-A. While he was off to a slow start he has picked it up tremendously of late and is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak having recorded multiple hits in seven of those nine contests. While he only has one long ball 29 of his 35 hits have gone for extra bases. The homers shouldn’t be too far off and Tomas seems to be coming into his own. He has seen a large spike in his fantasy ownership lately and that should continue. Grab him now while you can.

Ryan Howard, 1B, Philadelphia Phillies (43% owned)

It’s almost unthinkable but Ryan Howard is starting to resemble the Ryan Howard of old. He currently ranks eight in the National League in home runs (10) and ninth in slugging (.546) and is showing flashes of his former MVP self. His .270/.313/.546 slash line is right in line with his career numbers of .266/.354/.527 and he is hitting home runs at a pace not seen since 2011 when he played 141 games. If he keeps this up he could hit close to 40 home runs while driving in somewhere between 90 and 100. That is some serious production for a player the GM said the team would be better off without having on the roster. Howard’s days in Philly could be close to numbered but for someone who went largely undrafted he could bring big power numbers to your fantasy team. While he still may, and should, sit versus lefties, he’s definitely worth an add in all formats at this point.

Shawn Tolleson, RP, Texas Rangers (32% owned)

Neftali Feliz is on the disabled list and that means someone else in the Texas Rangers’ bullpen will be called upon to close out games. So far it looks like Tolleson is that someone. In the past week he has gone 4-for-4 in save opportunites while recording six of the twelve outs via strikeout. That trend is likely to continue as he is currently sporting an impressive 12.7 strikeouts per nine and has an equally impressive 30:4 K:BB ratio. While Feliz could eventually reclaim the job it looks like it belongs to Tolleson for now. If you are searching for some cheap saves look no further.

Jaime Garcia, SP, St. Louis Cardinals (19% owned)

Garcia was activated from the disabled list last week and had so-so results in his season debut. He gave up two earned runs in seven innings while giving up five hits and walking five with three strikeouts in a loss to the New York Mets. He toes the rubber again in a few minutes against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Garcia has been injured a lot during his short career but when he is on people on the Cardinals believe he has the best stuff of any member of the starting rotation. That is truly saying something when you take into account Adam Wainwright is the ace of the staff. The lefty is widely available now but is a big name and if he has a solid outing tonight he should see his stock rise quickly. There are no guarantees he will stay healthy this summer but there is a lot of upside here. I've already added him in one of my leagues. You should follow suit.
